FPX is how most Malaysians pay online. Over 1 billion FPX transactions are processed annually, per Bank Negara Malaysia’s payment statistics. Once your merchant account is approved, the technical integration takes under an hour. Here’s the full process, step by step.

What You’ll Need

  • SSM-registered business — Sdn Bhd, enterprise, or ROB sole proprietorship
  • Malaysian business bank account — any FPX-participating bank
  • Business documents — SSM certificate, 3 months of bank statements, director’s NRIC
  • Ecommerce platform — Shopify, WooCommerce, or a custom-built checkout
  • Payment gateway account — Billplz, iPay88, or Senangpay (Step 1 covers the choice)
  • Live or staging website URL — required during merchant application

FPX requires a licensed payment gateway between your store and the bank network. You cannot connect directly to PayNet (the operator of FPX) without a Payment System Operator license from Bank Negara Malaysia.

Step 1: Choose an FPX-Compatible Payment Gateway

FPX is supported by several Malaysian payment gateways. Your choice determines the per-transaction fee, settlement speed, and which other payment methods you can offer alongside FPX.

Which gateway to pick:

  • Starting out, FPX as primary method: Billplz Basic — lowest FPX fees, next-day settlement, free plan, self-serve Shopify.
  • Need e-wallets alongside FPX: iPay88 — supports Touch ’n Go, GrabPay, Boost, and ShopeePay. Higher fee, but covers all major Malaysian payment methods.
  • High volume (above ~RM 25,000/month in FPX): Billplz Standard pays for itself within a few months on the lower per-transaction rate.

Step 2: Register for a Merchant Account

Registration timelines differ by gateway:

  • Billplz: Sign up at billplz.com, complete the online business verification form, upload your documents. Approval typically takes 1-3 business days. Some accounts are approved the same day.
  • iPay88: Submit a merchant inquiry at ipay88.com. A sales representative contacts you, emails an application form, and processes it within 5-10 business days. Higher-volume accounts may qualify for negotiated rates.
  • Senangpay: Register at senangpay.my and submit documents through the merchant dashboard. Approval takes 1-3 business days.

Step 3: Submit Your KYC Documents

Every FPX-compatible gateway requires KYC verification per Bank Negara Malaysia’s payment services licensing rules. Prepare all documents in one batch before applying — incomplete submissions reset the review queue.

Required by all gateways:

  • SSM certificate — Form 9 for Sdn Bhd, Form D for ROB sole proprietors
  • Bank statement — Last 3 months, showing your business account in the company or business name
  • Director/owner NRIC — IC scan for all directors or the sole proprietor
  • Website URL — Your live or staging ecommerce URL
  • Business description — What you sell, estimated monthly volume, average order value

Additional for Sdn Bhd: Memorandum and Articles of Association, Form 24 (Share allotment), Form 49 (Directors particulars), and a board resolution authorizing the gateway account.

Step 4: Retrieve Your API Credentials

After approval, find your credentials in your gateway dashboard:

GatewayCredentials ProvidedWhere to Find Them
BillplzAPI Key + X-Signature KeyDashboard → Settings → API
iPay88Merchant Code + Payment KeyEmailed after approval
SenangpayMerchant ID + Secret KeyDashboard → Integration → API Settings

Store credentials in environment variables or a secrets manager. Never hard-code them in source files or commit them to a repository.

Step 5: Connect FPX to Your Ecommerce Platform

Shopify

Billplz on Shopify (self-serve, ~10-15 minutes):

  1. Shopify admin → Settings → Payments → Choose third-party provider
  2. Search “Billplz,” click Connect
  3. Enter your API Key and X-Signature Key
  4. Enable “FPX/Online Banking” under payment methods
  5. Save and activate

iPay88 on Shopify: Not self-serve. After merchant approval, contact your iPay88 account manager to request Shopify activation. Expect 1-3 business days for the integration link to be configured.

Senangpay on Shopify: Same self-serve process as Billplz. Search “Senangpay” in payment providers, connect, enter credentials, enable FPX.

WooCommerce

  1. Plugins → Add New → search your gateway’s plugin name
  2. Install and activate
  3. WooCommerce → Settings → Payments → find your gateway → Manage
  4. Enter Merchant ID/API Key and Secret Key
  5. Enable “FPX Online Banking” and save

Custom Checkout (API)

Use your gateway’s API to implement the FPX redirect flow: POST order details to the gateway endpoint, redirect the customer to the returned FPX URL, handle the server-to-server webhook callback, then confirm the order. Full documentation at the Billplz API docs or iPay88 developer guide.

Step 6: Configure FPX Payment Settings

After connecting, verify these settings:

Enable both FPX channels:

  • FPX Personal — standard B2C option, per-transaction limit up to RM 30,000 for most banks
  • FPX Corporate — for business buyers; higher limits, varies by bank

Webhook and redirect URLs:

  • Set your webhook/callback URL so the gateway can confirm payment server-to-server
  • Set success and failure redirect URLs
  • Confirm your callback URL is publicly accessible before going live

Step 7: Run a Live Test Transaction

FPX does not have a reliable sandbox — run a live RM 1-5 test from your own bank account to verify the integration end to end.

Test checklist:

  • Checkout redirects to the FPX bank selection page
  • Your bank appears in the FPX list
  • Payment completes and returns to your success page
  • Order status updates to paid in your dashboard
  • Transaction appears in your gateway’s transaction history
  • Webhook fires and your order system updates

If the order stays “pending” after a successful FPX payment: Your webhook URL is either not configured or not publicly reachable. Check your gateway’s webhook log to confirm the callback fired.

Step 8: Go Live and Monitor Your First Settlement

With your test passing, activate live mode and accept real payments.

First-week checklist:

  • FPX visible at checkout on your live store (check in incognito)
  • First real order processes and updates order status correctly
  • First settlement arrives within the timeframe your gateway quoted
  • Settlement amount reconciles: gross FPX total minus gateway fees equals bank deposit

Settlement reconciliation:

Your bank deposit equals gross FPX transactions minus gateway fees. At Billplz Basic: 10 transactions × RM 150 = RM 1,500 gross, minus RM 12.50 in fees (10 × RM 1.25) = RM 1,487.50 net. Download your gateway’s monthly transaction CSV and reconcile against your bank statement — most Malaysian accounting tools including Xero, QuickBooks, and SQL Account support direct CSV import from gateway reports.
